Os joalheiros mais antigos aconselham: o velho método de limpeza de jóias e gemas funciona e é seguro. Já as técnicas mais modernas exigem cuidados especiais para não danificar as gemas e jóias. A mais usada é a da fervura. Mas, atenção, essa técnica pode ser perigosa. Um choque térmico ocasionado por mudanças bruscas de temperatura, por exemplo, poderá prejudicar sua jóia.

A limpeza por ultrassom ou vibração também exige cuidados. Isso porque as gemas, como qualquer sólido, sofrem dilatações e contrações quando submetidas às mudanças de temperatura. Além disso, podem ter em seu interior fraturas ou falhas de cristalização, inclusões de minerais e outras substâncias, o que as tornam sensíveis aos choques térmicos e a aplicação de vibrações. Resultado: aumentarão as probabilidades de fraturas ou a retirada de óleos e resinas utilizados nos processos de tratamento das gemas.

Antes da aplicação de fervura, vibração ou ultrassom, vale a pena conhecer a grandeza física ou o coeficiente de dureza da gema, medido por ensaios laboratoriais e indicado por um valor dentro da escala de Mohs. O diamante, por exemplo, um dos sólidos mais duros encontrados na natureza, possui dureza 10 na escala Mohs. Gemas com dureza entre 8 e 10 são consideradas passíveis a serem submetidas a fervura, ultrassom e vibração. A utilização de uma lupa de 10 vezes de aumento vai ajudá-lo a determinar a existência de fraturas, inclusões ou tratamentos no interior de sua gema antes de limpá-la.

Diamantes, rubis, topázios, safiras, granadas, espinélios, jades, turmalinas, quartzos e crisoberilos devem ser submetidos ao exame de observação com lupa antes de serem limpos pelos processos descritos. Mas deixe para os profissionais a tarefa de usar vibradores ou ultrassom na limpeza das suas jóias e gemas, já que é grande o risco de ocorrerem quebras ou fraturas internas durante o processo.

Durante a fervura, cuidado com os choques térmicos. No mais, é só colocar a gema ou jóia em um suporte tipo peneira, que permita o contato direto da gema com o recipiente, elevar a temperatura da solução e detergente ou sabão neutro até a fervura de maneira bastante lenta e deixar fervendo por 10 ou 20 minutos. É aconselhável usar um pincel para escovar a jóia ou a gema.

E o velho método de limpeza aconselhado pelos joalheiros mais antigos? É simples. Basta escovar a gema e a jóia com um pincel de cerdas moles, embebido em uma solução de detergente de cozinha ou sabão neutro. Para secar, colocar as gemas dentro de um recipiente com farinha de mesa, produto que absorve rapidamente a umidade. Depois, com o auxílio de um secador de cabelos, com o jato de ar na temperatura ambiente, secar para retirar qualquer vestígio da farinha.
